The Centurion’s Faith

Continuing the series for October for mission’s month, the message at church this Sunday is on Matthew 8, about Jesus and the Centurion.

“When he came into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking him,
and saying, ‘Lord, my servant lies in the house paralyzed, grievously tormented.’
Jesus said to him, ‘I will come and heal him.’
The centurion answered, ‘Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
For I am also a man under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and tell another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and tell my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.’
When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to those who followed, ‘Most assuredly I tell you, I haven’t found so great a faith, not even in Israel.”

– Matthew 8:5-10 (WEB)

When we know who Jesus is, we are able to recognize our own unworthiness before the perfect and gracious Savior. And we understand the depth of His power and sovereignty. The centurion, though a Gentile, understood these when He met Jesus.

We can learn a lot from the faith of the centurion. Let’s pray for such faith as his to grow in us. Let’s pray for that same kind of faith in Jesus to fill us.

Lord, I pray
For faith
Like the centurion
To trust you
To believe in you
At all times
In all seasons.
And when my faith
Falters and
Fear abounds
Help me, Lord
To overcome
My unbelief.
Let me remember
That yours is the power
And all authority.
And you only need
To say the word
And it shall be done.
I only need to Believe in your Word
And it shall be done.
So I believe,
By your power:
I am saved,
I am healed,
I am washed,
I am forgiven,
So I know,
By your grace:
I shall not lack,
I shall not be defeated,
I shall not fear,
I shall not be moved!
I know,
Your Word is true,
Yes, it shall be done!

“Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly I tell you, if you have faith, and don’t doubt, you will not only do what is done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done.
All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

– Matthew 21:21-22 (WEB)

Our actions speak our faith. May whatever we do be done with faith in God.

May we choose to believe in God’s power when the way seems impossible. May we choose to trust in God’s might when our resources dwindle. May we choose to keep on holding on to God’s Word when we do not know and we cannot understand.
