Belonging to Christ

Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection is power for a believer. We no longer fight sin by our own ability, intelligence, and effort but we fight sin by the help of God Holy Spirit in us. Christ’s death and resurrection has such real and transforming power that all those who put their faith in Him can be changed internally. Sin no longer reign in us. We are still in the flesh and we live in this world but we are not of this world because we belong to Christ (John 17:16).

So, we still wrestle with sin from day to day because we are in the flesh. But God, through Jesus Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit give us power to obey God. Obedience and repentance must thrive in a believer’s life. Thus, belonging to Jesus Christ shows a visible change in our thinking as demonstrated by our actions. Because Christ has put to death the power of sin, we are also to crucify the flesh and its sinful desires.

Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. For these things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. You also once walked in those, when you lived in them, but now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings, and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator…”

– Colossians 3:5-10 (WEB)

When we belong to Christ, we don’t bear fruits of the flesh but the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-26 gives a sharp contrast between the life of a person who belongs to Christ and the person who does not.

Deeds of the Flesh (Galatians 5:18-21)

  • adultery
  • sexual immorality
  • uncleanness
  • lustfulneas
  • idolatry
  • sorcery
  • hatred
  • strife
  • jealousy
  • outbursts of anger
  • rivalries
  • divisions
  • heresies
  • envy
  • murders
  • drunkenness
  • orgies

The Bible teaches us that when we practice these things, we shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But those who belong to Christ live by the Spirit and walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:25)

Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • faith
  • gentleness
  • self-control

In a believer’s life where obedience and repentance are alive, God’s Spirit is evidently working through the fruit of the Spirit.

“Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.”

– Galatians 5:24-26 (WEB)

We belong to Christ, and this is not a mere joining a group of believers or being labeled as a Christian. We belong to Christ means that we live a life for Him.

This task is not easy for anyone of us. We can’t do this alone. We need the grace and working of God in our life. We could only do this if we are willing to rely daily on God. I pray, may we have the motivation to keep on choosing Jesus everyday. He gives us the power to say no to sin and resist the devil.

  1. This should be our daily prayer. To win in our daily battle and choose Jesus. That’s why its very important to start our day asking Him to give us wisdom and protect us from any temptations. Thank you for this post today Mam Debs.❤️❤️❤️
