Good things are blessings from God. The word good may be subjective. People can have different views about what is a good thing and what is not based on the values, culture, and belief. Sometimes, what we deem as good in this world is not in truth good because it runs contrary to what the Word of God teaches. Thus, we must understand the word good according to how God defines good. No matter what opinion the world gives, good things must be seen under the lens of the Word of God.
Good in the Bible refers to the quality of being beneficial, sufficient, morally excellent, kind, and fair. It brings us happiness or pleasure. Again, in the context of the Bible, happiness and pleasure do not imply anything that satisfies us or that gives us pleasure without glorifying God. Good things in the context of God’s word carry not only a physical attribute that would please us but also a moral one.
All the good things we experience are blessings from God. Our food, clothing, and the shelter which give us comfort and pleasure. Our friends and family which cheer our heart. Every provision God supplies daily which we need to live are all good things from God — the air we breath, the sun that warms us, the light that makes us see things, the rain that refreshes, the waters in rivers and seas, the soil that produces bounty, the trees and grasses, the fishes and sea creatures, and practically everything God has made are all good things designed for our own good.
These good things God designed as good are distorted by sin. The very nature of man which God created perfectly and to which God was greatly pleased was broken because of sin. But God’s plan for us all is always good. His will has always been good. He made another good thing for us. He restored the brokenness that sin brought to the world through His Son Jesus Christ. So, today and times to come, we have the Good News that changes us and leads us to a blessed and abundant life with Christ. God’s plan for us is always good.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.”– Jeremiah 29:11-13 (WEB)
When we fear God, we shall not lack any good thing. Any good thing is NOT anything we like or we deem as good regardless of what God says. We must take note that it is those who fear God who shall not lack any good thing. Who are the ones who fear God? They are the ones who follow Christ, who live in obedience to God according to what His Word says, and who consistenly live surrendered lives to God.
“Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.”– Psalms 33:9-10 (WEB)
This is a great comfort for all who follow God and who experience troubles and great needs. God provides and He shall not fail in supplying good things for us. What great hope we have that when we seek the Lord we shall not lack any good thing.
I could attest to this. We have a huge financial trouble at home but how blessed we are to experience God’s daily provision. Never a day do we lack food and other basic necessities. Never a month have we missed paying our bill. We could consistently share our tithe and offering with a cheerful heart. We experience a peaceful sleep, peaceful waking up every morning, and a peaceful going on of our every day. Do we have a problem? Yes, we do and it is a big one. Do we experience lack? In terms of the problem, we are still in need of a permanent solution up to now, but in terms of our daily needs, God amazingly provides each day and each month. Do we get troubled? Yes, for several times we do feel overwhelmed and we worry how we could overcome our great financial burden. But the worry never stays. We are inhabited by praises to the faithful and miracle-working God. Do we lose hope? Not at all. We feel weary at times and tired of thinking but our hope does not waver because our hope is in God. When God is our hope, even when we could not see it, we are sure that His answer is on its way!
Seek the Lord and know this. Seeking God is not out of our own will. God’s Spirit working in us enables us to fear God and seek Him. It is not a matter of self-righteousness or self- effort. We can never boast of our own effort of seeking Him. All of these come from God. We need to acknowledge that we are sinners and we are weak and that we need God to save us, change us, and lead us to the right way. So, when we experience God’s goodness when we obey Him, it is not because we are good but because God is good and God makes us good and He provides us with good things.
“Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”– Psalms 34:8 (WEB)
