God is Your Confidence

Take courage in fearful news. News of the pandemic and news of war are probably two of the fearful events we heard recently. They are alarming and they bring about distress to almost every one. They affect all other people around the world, directly or indirectly. There are many fearful news that beset the world. Even in our personal life we are not exempted from receiving bad news.

When I was busy in school in August of 2018, I suddenly received a call from my aunt at home telling me that my father had collapsed. It was a devastating news and somehow I knew in my heart that it was serious. My father died in the hospital that day. The feelings of intermingled grief, loss, and fear enveloped me. As I was going home, I was praying and the words almost visually flashed in my mind, “I will never leave you, I will never forsake you.” Such was the comfort God assured me when my heart was deeply sorrowful and fearful. He gave me peace that everything will be alright because He is with me.

Fearful news are what they exactly are — fearful. But God is also exactly what He is — God. The almighty, sovereign, faithful, and powerful God. No fearful news can totally shake us when we rest in His mighty presence. We can take courage when we take cover under His shadow.

“He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.

– Psalms 91:4-6 (WEB)

The Lord is our confidence in fearful times. Being confident in God is being assured that God always has the upper hand in every situation we face. It does not assure us of a fear-free conditions, but fear cannot abide long in us when God is our confidence. This faith issues out of a heart that knows God personally. A person who had walked the path of faith and had seen firsthand how faithful, loving, just, and sovereign God is. That person takes God as his or her confidence. Fearful times do not easily cause a violent stir in the person’s life. Fearful situations draw him or her more to the LORD in trust and reliance.

The Bible instructs us not to fear of sudden fearful times. When fearful events come unepxectedly and we are unprepared to tackle them, even in those situations we are not to be afraid because God is our confidence. When God is our confidence, we believe, trust, and rely that He is able to work things out for our good and to keep provision, protection, and blessing flowing into our life. We trust that God’s will is good for us. We trust God to keep us firmly and steadily moving on in the middle of the crisis. He shall not allow us to slip and fall but He holds us firm and strong.

“Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes; for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.”

– Proverbs 3:25-26 (WEB)

Don’t be afraid because God is your confidence. He shall not let your foot slip. He shall hold you in place.

“He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness; for no man will prevail by strength.

1 Samuel 2:9 (WEB)
