The LORD is Peace

Money can’t buy peace of mind. They say, money can’t buy happiness. It is true because happiness can be attained when one is at peace within. Peace of mind is one of the strongest connection to true happiness. There may be other things that contribute to our happiness, but without peace of mind, happiness is tainted and incomplete.

Where there is fear, there is chaos. A lot of other negative emotions breed when we are afraid. We can feel angry, irritable, worried, insecure, and unsafe. Many people struggle with fear. All of us have something we fear in life. Fear affects our mental, emotional, and even physical condition. We can get sick if we are constantly afraid and worried. It brings stress mentally and physically that our body carries the repercussions. Fear is a natural response but for some people it becomes a disorder or a debilitating condition when they could not control it. But, even when it is controllable and normal, fear is not something we want to experience on a regular basis. It is not only unpleasant and unhealthy, but it is a feeling that tells us something is not right or that we are in danger.

No amount of wealth or money could make us feel peaceful deep within us. Only God can give us true peace that is lasting and genuine that it permeates our mind and heart. Only God is the source of peace because He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.”

– John 14:27 (WEB)

God is a giver of peace. Have you ever noticed that people who surrendered their life to Jesus Christ have a certain glow of peace and happiness from within? They have quiet strength and confidence that tells us they can be peaceful in the middle of crisis. They do because their peace does not only come from their own efforts of positive thinking and meditation (though these are good for us), but their peace originates from God. They have peace because they have God in their life.

One of the wonderful things in the story of Gideon in the Bible was when he realized that the man he was talking to was actually the angel of God.

“Gideon saw that he was Yahweh’s angel; and Gideon said, ‘Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen Yahweh’s angel face to face!’ Yahweh said to him, ‘Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.’”

– Judges 6:22-23 (WEB)

Gideon, upon realizing he was face to face with the angel of God, was suddenly strickened with fear. But, take note how God dealt with Gideon. God gave him peace and comforted Him to not be afraid. Because of this, Gideon built an altar to the LORD and called it “The LORD is peace” (Judges 6:24).

Whenever we feel afraid, we can go to the Giver of peace. We can approach God and He shall cast away our fears. He will give us peace and assure us that we are safe from any harm, threat, or danger. God told Gideon not to be afraid because he will not die. God says the same thing to us today. When we are in His presence, our life is secure and we should not be afraid because His peace is upon us.

“You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.”

– Isaiah 26:3 (WEB)

  1. Great post Deborah! There is peace in nothing or anyone other than in the Lord. This reminds me of times I have faced severe health problems, and people have commented on how peaceful I am in the circumstances…I do not hesitate to point them to the origin of my peace – Almighty God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
Thank you sister, may you have a blessed Lord’s Day.

  2. We all need that peace! Peace that comes from the Lord! Genuine and lasting peace. This is the very reason why i want to share Jesus to others, because I want them to also experience the kind of peace i have in my life.
