Sleeping and waking up are God’s graces. We may become too confident of our capabilities and achievements but there are many things that could keep our feet on the ground and which remind us that we are never self-sufficient. Take for instance, our sleeping and waking up. Every day we are in a cycle of sleeping and waking up. When we lack sleep, every thing else is affected. Our focus, our mental processing, our mood, our work quality, and our health. When we oversleep the same things are affected. We may tend to take sleeping and waking up for granted but they could affect the core activities of our life. Some people need to be treated to be able to sleep or they need to take prescription drugs to get to sleep because sleeping and waking up are natural, needed, and important part of our life. It is unnatural not to be able to sleep. And, not to wake up from sleep is a fearful thought! But what is the point? Sleeping and waking up are crucial to our life yet these do not come from our own ability, skill, or talent. Man could induce sleep and could set alarm to wake up, but none of us could control when to sleep and when not to sleep. Maybe, for a short while, yes, but our body will seek its natural response to getting its sleep and to waking up in the appointed time of the day as designed by God. The point is that even sleeping and waking up are God’s graces to us. We sleep and we wake up every day because God enables us to. God sets for us the time in the day to sleep and the time to wake up. God is the only one who is in perfect control of that.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.”– Ecclesiastes 3:1 (WEB)
God sustains us whether we are asleep or we are awake. It is an amazing thing to ponder about. God is a caring God. He is kind and faithful. Imagine we wake up every day to each of our own affairs and we get busy with work and goals, yet He arranges all things for us every day. Imagine retiring to sleep and laying down unaware of the things happening around, yet God is there taking care of all things and ensuring that we get a good sleep and a safe rest. Whether we are asleep or we are awake, God is there. He is present. He is Immanuel. He is with us in every thing and in our every day.
“I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for Yahweh sustains me.”– Psalms 3:5 (WEB)
What is more amazing is that even when we face great trouble, we can have confidence of God’s sustenance when we sleep or when we wake up. Such was David’s confidence on God when he was in big trouble with his son Absalom. He had peace and confidence even with the danger and threat he was facing. He could sleep with peace and wake up the next day comforted by God’s sustaining hand.
What troubles you today? What keeps you awake and worried? Turn it over to God. Take it to the LORD Jesus in prayer. Receive His grace and peace. Jesus is your strength and peace as He was to David. He causes the sun to rise and set and causes the moon to light up so you could have a time to sleep and a time to wake up. He is there to sustain you whether you are asleep or awake.
