They Can Tell

People can tell if God is with you or not. God’s light cannot be hidden. His grace will always show. Thus, people who live in obedience to God give off a certain “feel” that tells others something is good and different.

People who love God and who keep His Word have good reputation. And, their reputation precedes them. People know them by their works. In church, in their work place, and in the community, the people know their goodness and know that they are Christians.

When we were still teens, we used to hang out in church or at a friend’s house. Our “hanging out” actually meant practicing songs for the music team and jamming after practice. It was a usual scene to see our group walking home every friday or saturday night going home from church after our practice. We were quite surpised that other groups of teens who used to sit by the street knew us and even knew our names. One even commented that we were the type who don’t go out to drink or smoke. We were very surprised at their perception of us. That time, it dawned on me, that even when we do not broadcast who we are and what we do, people can tell by our way of life.

Even when we don’t tell others openly what we do and what our principles are, still they can tell and they have an idea of who God is in our life. God’s light in us will always shine through. It is evident.

Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:16 (WEB)

When God is with you, people will hear of God’s greatness. Even people who do not know you personally will have an idea how God uses you to bless others or what your life principles are as a Christian.

Neighboring nations of Israel knew how great God is to the chosen people even when they need not go and see them for themselves. They had seen how God used Moses to part the Red Sea and other great things God did through Israel. So, when Joshua sent two spies to Jericho, Rahab, the prostitute, who hid the spies told them how they feared Israel because God was with Israel.

“She said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed. As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.”

– Joshua 2:9-11 (WEB)

When God’s hand is upon you, you will have the favor of God and man. He will cause you to prosper. He will cause you to have good reputation. He will cause you to be blessed. Above all, He will cause people to know who He is in your life. These do not, however, mean that everything will be smooth and easy. God was with Israel, but they had to fight, they had to go to battle, they had to make sacrifices, and they had to act in faith. Yet, in all of it, God was with them. He never left them. He blessed them. As He was with Israel, so God is with us today. He will never leave us nor forsake us. His hand upon us will cause people to know that He is God, He is mighty, and He is good.
