You can be peaceful in the midst of the storm. You do not wait for calmness to feel peaceful. You can be peaceful even in harsh and difficult times. Just as you can feel disquietment and unrest even at the most ideal situation, so you can feel peace even in the stormy situations. But this kind of peace is not the peace of this world. It is the peace that is perfect. And perfect peace can only come from a perfect being. It can only come from God. Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He alone is the source of peace that can make you confident and calm in the midst of the storm.
You can sleep in the storm as Jesus did! One of the great stories that I love in the Bible is the time when Jesus calmed the storm. “And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” -Mark 4:36-39. Isn’t it too wonderful to realize that Jesus was able to sleep through the storm? Who can do that? A heavy rain would already keep most of us on our feet checking the water level from time to time. It was a great windstorm and water was already breaking into the boat. Imagine, a great windstorm blowing and the water is breaking into your house. Can you sleep peacefully? Absolutely, no! But Jesus did that. He slept peacefully and at one rebuke, the storm quieted. Jesus proved to the disciples who He is. He is God. He is in control of everything. He is sovereign. He can calm the storm. He is the source of peace. When you trust Him, He lets you experience His perfect peace. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” -Isaiah 26:3. When your life is in the hands of the Prince of Peace, you can also sleep in the storm. You can be asleep even when the storm rages because, whether Jesus calms the storm or not, He gives you peace. It is not the presence or absence of the storm that matters. It is the presence of God that matters. He is not only able to calm the storm for you, but He is also able to give you peace in the middle of the storm.
